Research & Teaching
The University of Mississippi Department of Physics and Astronomy has dynamic research programs in
Atmospheric Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Gravitational Physics, Particle Physics , and Physical Acoustics.
The experimental High Energy Physics program includes major participation in the Compact Muon Solenoid
(CMS)
experiment at CERN,
the DØ experiment at
FERMILAB, the
BABAR
experiment at SLAC,
and the Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration
(NFMCC).
Our research on CMS includes investigations in to micro black-hole production at the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) and Higgs production
through top quark decays. On the DØ experiment we are searching for Higgs→γγ decays
and are making precision measurements of the W-mass. We have completed a number of measurements at the SLAC
B-factory including CP violation in the b-meson system, measurements of the neutral and charged B production
fraction, f00, at the Υ(4S), and precision measurements of B→D(*)ℓν
and B→D(*)a1 branching fractions.
We are presently a Tier 3 cluster on the Virtual Data Grid that is used to analyze data from the CMS and the
DØ detectors. Current work is centered on DØ Monte Carlo reconstruction, but soon we will turn
our attention to LHC data analysis.
The Gravitational Physics program includes research in classical and quantum gravity, black holes, and the
search for gravitational waves with the
LIGO Observatories.
