Research & Teaching
Created in 1999, the Galician Institute of High Energy Physics (IGFAE) is a joint centre of the University of Santiago de Compostela and Xunta de Galicia (regional government). The IGFAE currently has about 130 members, including permanent staff, junior & postdoc researchers, PhD students, and technical and management staff.
The IGFAE research covers three main strategic areas:
- The Standard Model to the limits
- Cosmic Particles and Fundamental Physics
- Nuclear Physics from the lab to improve people’s health
Since its foundation, collaboration in large international infrastructures such as CERN, GSI/FAIR, Pierre Auger Observatory and LIGO is part of the IGFAE's DNA.
In 2016, IGFAE was accredited “María de Maeztu” Unit of Excellence. This program of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities recognises the centres that stand out for the relevance and impact, at international level, of their research results.
