Research and Teaching
CIEMAT, created in 1951, is a public research institute active in energy and environment research, as well as in state-of-the-art technology and basic research.
The Particle Physics Group at CIEMAT gave birth to experimental high energy physics in Spain in the 1960's. Currently our group belongs to the Basic Research Department at CIEMAT, and is composed by the Particle Physics Division, the Astroparticle Physics Division and the Scientific Computing Unit..
CIEMAT-FP participates in large international experiments at the forefront of knowledge and technology in Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Cosmology, detector R&D and Scientific Computing. These are the current research lines:
Collider physics (CMS at CERN's LHC)
Direct dark matter searches (DArT, DarkSide, DEAP-3600)
Neutrino physics (Double Chooz, ProtoDUNE, SBN, DUNE, Liquido)
Detector R&D (CMS upgrades, CALICE)
Cosmic-ray physics (AMS)
Very-high energy gamma-ray (CTA)
Observational Cosmology (DES, PAU)
Gravitational Waves (VIRGO)
High performance computing.
Our institute offers students the possibility of making their Ph.D. theses in a wide range of state-of-the-art research topics, both in particle and astroparticle physics.
In 2015 the Particle and Astroparticle Physics Deptartment at CIEMAT was awarded the Research Excellence Prize Maria de Maeztu.
