Research & Teaching
The main focus of the Institute of Physics is teaching and research in various fields of physics, such as magnetism, low temperature physics, nanotechnology, nuclear physics, biophysics, theoretical physics, astrophysics and didactics of physics. Different physics courses are taught in several study programs: bachelor and magister study programs in physics and in teaching of academic subjects in combination with physics and doctoral study programs in 7 disciplines.
Department of Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics:
The department’s scientific teams are interested in two main areas of research in subnuclear physics: ultrarelativistic heavy-ion and nucleon collisions and light nuclei interactions at medium energies. Our main goals are studying the structure of the matter at small distances (quark level), the characteristics of nuclear forces, reaction mechanisms, the signals of nuclear spin structure and polarization properties. Our research teams participate in several collaborations in outstanding international research centers: CERN, Geneva, Switzerland (ATLAS and ALICE experiments at the LHC collider) and JINR, Dubna, Russia (theoretical physics, MPD experiment at the NICA accelerator, now under construction).
Another area of research of the department is cosmic physics, studying interactions of energetic cosmic particles with electromagnetic field and matter. There is also an option to study applied nuclear physics focusing on the applications of nuclear radiation in medicine.
