Vilnius University (VU) is one of the oldest universities in Eastern and Central Europe. It was established in 1579. Currently, VU employs over 1500 academic staff, offers study programs for 21000 students and conducts research in most of the main fields in science, technology, social sciences and humanities at 12 faculties and 7 institutes. In 2015 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Physics & Astronomy, Vilnius University is ranked between 251 and 300.

The Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics Center coordinates collaboration with CERN. The main collaborating teams work at the institutes of the Faculty of Physics (the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology and the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics.

The researchers participate in several CERN Research and Development activities (like "Radiation-hard semiconductor detectors" and "Crystal Clear Collaboration"). Data of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is analyzed.

Lithuania became an associated member of CERN in 2018!

The outreach group of the Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics Center offers several activities, including popular science lectures and experimental activities in an educational laboratory.
