Research & Teaching

The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY is Member of the Helmholtz Association and has two locations: Hamburg and Zeuthen (Brandenburg). The research carried out at DESY is extremely diverse. The scientists who work here are looking for the tiniest building blocks of matter that make up our world, developing innovative high-tech materials and searching for new mechanisms of action for future medications. As one of Germany's largest research centres, DESY carries out fundamental research that creates new knowledge and new conceptual approaches.
Research at DESY focuses on four areas:

  • Accelerators
  • Photon science
  • Particle physics
  • Astroparticle physics
DESY offers a wide range of training and further education opportunities for pupils, students and young scientists. Trainees come to DESY for a "testing period", summer students join the research groups, school leavers undergo vocational training, students work on their master or doctoral theses at DESY, young scientists achieve professional qualification. At DESY they gain an increased awareness of quality and capacity for teamwork, an important prerequisite for responsible positions in industry.
