Research & Teaching
A. Alikhanyan National Laboratory (the first name was The Yerevan Physics Institute) was founded in 1943 as a branch of Yerevan State University by brothers Abraham Alikhanov and Artem Alikhanian.
Later two high-altitude cosmic ray stations were founded on Mount Aragats (3,200 m) and Nor Amberd (2,000 m).
Traditional topic of AANL is the development of new particle detectors. Wide spark chambers and transition radiation detectors are examples of the experimental techniques developed and implemented in AANL. During the last years groups of scientists from A. Alikhanyan National Laboratory have actively participated in intermediate and high energy physics experiments abroad (JLAB, DESY, CERN-LHC, MAX-lab, MAMI), exploring the meson and nucleon structures, electromagnetic interactions of the nucleon, quark-hadron duality, short range nucleon-nucleon correlations, quark hadronization in nuclear medium, physics beyond standard model, Higgs boson searches, quark-gluon plasma, fission and fragmentation of nuclei and hyper nuclei and many other topics, as well as constructing experimental hardware and develop the software for data acquisition and analysis. The theoretical department assure major achievements in the following areas: B-meson physics, QCD and Related Phenomenology, Neutrino physics, Quantum Field Theory, String/M-theory,Integrable Models, Statistical physics, Condensed Matter and Quantum Information. These results are internationally recognized and highly cited.
National lab scientists publish appr. 30% of scientific publications of Armenia. Most of publications appear in high impact factor journals; high quality of research in national lab is proved by citations – more than 60% of overall citations to papers published by scientists from Armenia belong to the national lab.
At the moment A. Alikhanyan National Laboratory consist of Scientific
divisions:
1. Applied physics research department
2. Center for cosmology and astrophysics
3. Computational Physics and IT (CP&IT) Department
4. Cosmic Ray Division (CRD)
5. Experimental physics division
6. Isotopes Research and Production Department
7. Matinyan center for theoretical physics

Outreach
There are both full-and-part-time study programs (three or four years of education, respectively) in the following specializations:
● Theoretical Physics
● Nuclear Physics, Physics of Elementary Particles and Cosmic Rays Physics
The Regional Doctoral Program on Theoretical and Experimental Particle Physics sponsored by the Volkswagen foundation, including the Armenian, Georgian and German nodes, offers students a unique chance to attend the colloquium, lectures series and seminars by advanced researchers from
AANL and a number of overseas top universities. Within the framework of this Program the Laboratory has admission for the position of PhD
students in Theoretical and Experimental Physics.
A.Alikhanyan National Science laboratory offers a two-year Master’s program “Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics”.
The program aims at teaching the basics of Experimental Physics on the basis of modern research problems and providing profound knowledge in the sphere of applied research. The educational process draws upon the modern research methods, experiment designing and data analysis. Seminars and internship, organized within the framework of the program, provide the students and future researchers with crucial skills for conducting experiments, analyzing the data, presenting and evaluating the material. The students also have a chance to participate in research at any division at AANL.
All graduates of the master's and postgraduate program continue their professional activities in collaborating international organizations: the largest of which are the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Jefferson Laboratory (Jlab), (DESY), Hamburg and different departments of AANL. We have about 50 students practicing and being supervised in AANL. AANL established internships programs in different departments of the AANL Foundation.
