Research & Teaching

Department for Experimental Particle Physics at J. Stefan Institute cooperates closely with the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana. Furthermore researchers collaborate very closely with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (University of Ljubljana), with the Department of Astroparticle Physics (University of Nova Gorica) and with the Faculty of chemistry and chemical engineering (University of Maribor).

Research in experimental particle physics depends on large particle accelerators and complex detectors. Experiments are therefore conducted in a few large research centres around the world and are based on team work and international cooperation. Researchers of our department are members of high-energy physics collaborations: ATLAS at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, Belle and Belle II at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan and Pierre Auger Project at FERMILAB in the USA.

It has been possible to study Physics and Mathematics at the University of Ljubljana since it was founded in 1919. The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in its current structure was formed in 1995. Today, the Faculty has 1100 undergraduate students, 80 postgraduate students, 19 lecture rooms, 5 computer classrooms, 3 computer laboratories for individual use, 5 teaching laboratories, 2 research laboratories and 5 libraries. Each year, a programming competition for students is held and Halcom awards are given for the best student research projects.
