Research & Teaching

The Laboratoire de l'Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL) is a joint research unit (UMR 8607) of the CNRS/IN2P3 and of the Paris-Sud University . The core research field of LAL is particle physics, that is the study of the elementary components of matter, of their interactions and of the origin of their masses. The laboratory is also involved in several other fields: cosmology, astroparticles, ultra-high energetic phenomena in the Universe, astrophysics and neutrino physics. In order to carry out their experiments, LAL physicists benefit from the support of various lab technical and administrative departments -- mechanics, vacuum technology, electronics, computing science and information technology. In addition, the interdisciplinary accelerator department manages all accelerator-related lab projects, ranging from technological R&D to serial production of accelerator components, including local machines, accelerator physics studies and simulation development. Finally, the laboratory is involved in various teaching and outreach activities, both at university and high-school levels . The main experiments and projects in which the LAL is currently involved are ATLAS, Auger, BaBar, D0, ELI-NP, ILC, LHCb, LSST, Super-NEMO, PHIL, Planck, ThomX, Advanced Virgo and XFEL.
