Research and teaching

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) was founded in the year 1847. Its mission is to promote science of all fields, in particular fundamental science. The ÖAW (about 600 Austrian and international scientists) is one of the leading research institutions in addition to the universities.
The Stefan Meyer Institut (SMI) was founded in 1910 as “Institut für Radiumforschung” as first institute of the ÖAW. Today the main research topics are precision experiments at low energies (properties of antimatter, neutron decay experiments) and the study of hadrons and their interactions (strange particles, quark-gluon-plasma). The SMI is involved in several international experiments such as CERN, the European organisation for particle physics. The institute offers a variety of lectures and practica at the (Technical) University of Vienna.
